EBay... Two Comments

Post by jcreasy »

First, has everyone seen the 4005/6? Any comments on the rarity/playability and so forth? I've always thought the regular 4005s were extremely rare... Very interesting.

Second, anyone else here ever notice that no matter what guitar Chicago Music Exchange is selling, they always say: "... this rare bird blah, blah, blah, blah, blah blah." (Sorry, I guess I'm just cranky this morning).

I've posted about this in a previous thread. I'll e-mail you off-line this evening....

Oh, all right!! Stop twisting my arm!! ;^)

I called CME one day upon discovering they had a couple of 4005's in stock. One was a double bound '67 mapleglo, the other was a 6-string mapleglo....

I asked the salesperson how much for either one and got a "rough" figure of "around $6500 or so", but they'd have to check and call me back. Waited a couple of days, no call....I then called back and got a different salesman that told me that "Rickenbacker never made a six-string version of the 4005" and he was kind of snotty about it on top of it all....I was kind of shocked that he would say that, being a "professional", so I just told him "ummm, you're wrong" but I didn't want to waste my time arguing and sending him several pics of 4005-6s , so I told him "buh-bye" and spent my money somewhere else on a 4-string 4005, which was obviously all that Rickenbacker ever produced...so I did.

It was his attitude that did him in....I should have gotten his name and talked to the manager and told him why he lost a sale. I probably would've paid whatever they were asking for it at that time too, as I was HOT for a 4005 in any form!!

I had a terrible experience with the CME too, and will never shop there again.

They consistently have nice Ricks in stock, but with extraordinary prices. I question the staff's integrity, and their customer service is dispicable.

Customer service and their follow-up sucks even when it comes to interested (cash in hand, previous customers) parties inquiring to buy high-end instruments I'm sorry to say. I just don't call anymore and disperse my business elsewhere!

My beef is with CME's lack of concern when some crooks starting posting fake CME eBay ads. The ads stayed active, in spite of repeated notifications to CME that its "good name" was at risk .... wait, now I get it! Image

You know, I dont think I've ever read anything good about Chicago Music Exchange.

Thats good enough reason for me to stay away.

One thing is a gimme with CME, you likely won't get a 'deal' from them. I did get one deal from them on a 360V about a year ago but it was only because they made a mistake.

My pet peeve with them: EVERY guitar (don't know if they do this with basses) includes the following description:

"Beautiful chords ring out as well as nice smooth single note work."

Yeah, that "... beautiful chords" comment is another one. Cracks me up. Maybe one day they will do an eBay ad that reads:

"This guitar really isn't all that rare... It sounds pretty decent with chords, but the pickups are not really hot enough for leads unless you are in a one guitar arrangement."

Somce they don't care when folks rip off their ads, maybe I'll do a parody next time I sell one of my Strato's on eBay.

I posted this once before, but I will say it again. As mentioned above, CME uses the same "rare all original" language on every guitar. In the thread a couple of months ago, we were discussing CME because they were buying something rather than selling, and we got a good look into what they buy on that account. Fixeruppers, so they are not all original. If CME would be honest about the condition they bought the guitar in and tell what parts were added and where the parts came from to get it back to original specs.,I would have some respect from them. Tell a story about each vintage guitar you are selling, rather than make cute commercials and the stock language on every listing. Wait, their customers are wealthy people who want to have one vintage guitar hanging on the wall and they will never know the difference. Done ranting this gloomy Saturday morning.
