Tuner question....

Post by beatlefan »

I got that Nov.'72 4001 off the 'bay a few days ago and was wondering what the correct tuners should look like? I was sent tuners that look like todays except they don't say "Rickenbacker" on them and they have red-top screws....anybody have pics of the correct one's?

Thanks in advance!

It should have grover slimlines on it. The keys are wavy and the backs are rectangular with little lines on it. They say Grover USA and pat. pend. on the back. they're expensive but can be found on ebay occasionally. Any photo of a 72 and other early 70's Rics with original tuners should have them on it. I see basses with them on ebay all the time.

I actually picked up a set of Grover tuners for my '74 4001 on Ebay last week. Paid $236.19, not bad considering those went for $405 a few days earlier.

Thanks guys.....I am familiar with them (got 'em on my early '73), but for some reason , I was thinking the earlier one's had the cloverleaf less the "Rickenbacker" name....my bad.

Those in the above auction are NOS.....I would have paid that for an NOS project..most of the used ones go for about what Chris paid....or less.

OK....who wants to give up a set of their wavy Grovers? Image

I picked up a set on Ebay about a month ago from a British seller for 70 pounds. I needed one for a restoration project but figured that having some spares wouldn't be a bad idea. These particular tuners don't have a reputation for being terribly durable.

Those weren't the correct ones, it says something about Mosrite in the ad, maybe they were original on Mosrite basses.
