Vintage style TRC on a 4003

Post by loverickbass »

Does anyone have a pic of a vintage TRC on a 4003? I was thinking about exchanging mine but I want to see how it looks first.

The vintage re-issue TRC as used on the V63 was HUGE(I don't have the measurements with me). I think I sized it up on one of my 4001's and it was about 1 or 2 mm longer than the headstock. But that was the late 70's 4001 headstock. The new headstock on the 4003 might be longer.

If you look at a late v63 headstock you'll see what it looks like. The late v63 headstock is the same as the current 4003.

I tried one of those vintage trc's ... it was really long ... I dumped it for a modern one ... my 1968 had one that is the same shape and size as the modern one ... it just didn't have the raised letters ...

I tried one on my 4003 and it is too long. It butts right up against the machine head. I switched it back.

I must be the odd ball around here but I don't like the long headstocks. I was thinking that a vintage replacement would look better on my '04 because it would take up some of that huge head.

Anyone want to trade modern for vintage?

The large headstock on my 2002 4003 makes the bass really neck heavyImage

Actually the true vintage trc as on my 67 are shorter than the trc on the late v63,the earlier v63's had the shorter vintage type-everybody thinks the headstock on the later model v63's were shorter not true the trc was made longer.

The trussrod covers on the late v63s were longer than previous, but the headstocks were also shorter. It is true. My first thought was it's just the TRC, but when you see them next too each other you can tell.

You can see this in the CS models too. The late ones have the slightly shorter/stubbier looking headstocks, that the current 4003 bass has.

Someone has to have some good headstock pics!

John,i had my 67 side by side with my 99 v63 the headstock length was the same the thickness was different from front to back the v63 was thicker along with the neck ,the body was remarkably similar dimensions-the headstock on the v63 slants back the 67 is straight. The trc on the v63 was longer.the slant might have something to do with the look.

My '04 4003FL and '98 4001 V63 have identical headstocks. The vintage TRC (VTRC) comes about 1/4" short of the end of the headstock. The '67 and '73 TRCs on my 4005WB and 4001 are two different sizes, and they are both different than the current VTRC. Personally, I think the current VTRC looks just fine on these basses.
