Question about string gauge

Post by ricnvolved »

I've got a 2000 1997SPC arriving next week. My plan is to put a set of Pyramid roundwounds on this guitar and would like advice on the gauge to go with. At the very least, I will be putting on the .011-.050 set. However, I'm also considering the .012-.054 gauge, but this particular set has a wound 'G'. Does anyone know whether a wound 'G' would be tonally "correct" with a 1997SPC? Or is a wound 'G' geared towards Strats with the extended pole pieces?

Thanks in advance for any informed opinions on this.

Jeffrey: I see no reason why you would have difficulty using a wound G. I have used a wound G on my Model 350 and it produces a nice full sound. I consider that Lennon used a wound G on his Rickenbackers and things worked out well for him. I would recommend the 11s which should chime nicely for you. Pyramid 10s worked fine for me on my 350 with regard to sound, however, if you are a string bender mind the connective tissue! Pyramids are a nice sounding but stiff string for those of us who are string benders in the "vintage" stage of life. Please let us know what you eventually use and how things turned out with regard to sound and playability. Thanks.
Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm

"Vintage" stage of life....that's cute, PeterImage

I'd second what Peter has said above, 10's or 11's will work fine for you. I've got Pyramid 10's on right now and will soon be upgrading to 11's. No truss rod adjustment should be needed for the 11's either. The wound G is all good, and provides a great tone, whether you bend strings like Peter, or NEVER do, like me. You should be happy with whatever choice you make with Pyramid.
