While they may not deliberately mislead, photos of black intstruments are subject to a number of lighting conditions that sometimes fool the eye."
Ive had a good look at the pic and I find the evidence inconclusive. It is not *obviously* a Ric. It MAY be but then it may be a 3 pu anything else. (unless of course ric was the only 3 pu guitar of the period)
Wishful thinking can also fool the eye.
I can recall any amount of gigs where there were 2 or 3 bands on the bill and someone would want a smoke break, the guitars would be left onstage and a couple of guys would get up from another band and do stuff so, its not even conclusive that anyone in the pic or associated with THE Beatles even owned the guitar in the background
Sorry guys , in the face of the evidence , "Not Proven"

John: I would agree that the eye may see what the brain expects even when it isn't there. Your point is well taken. Please confirm, however, to which above photo are you refering, the Cavern practice with Paul and Mike or the Tower Ballroom photo, or perhaps both?

Peter , I'm referring to the pic with McCartney ? at the piano. The guitar to the left of the piano , at the rear is 3 pu BUT , the headstock and tail is obscured and not even the distinctive ric cutaways are visible. The guitar could possibly be an early Hofner Senator or President or Club.. I cant remember their detail other than blonde was the main colour and they had a single cutaway

John: There is always a remote chance that this would not be John's guitar, however, given the context and the rough time frame I am still betting it is the 1958 325. The piano edge obscures the upper bout. No other Beatle guitar that I can think of had the same natural finish and three pickups. It does not fit the profile of the Futurama or the Hofner.
