Bob Wooler Dies
Bob Wooler Dies
I understand that Bob Wooler, the famous 1960s DJ who introduced the Beatles many times at the Cavern, has died today after a long illness.
Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm

I met Bob at the cavern in about 1968 at an allnite gig we were doing and saw him on an ABC ( Australia) program last nite about Paul McCartney ..
He didnt seem to have aged a great deal inthe intervening years.. He seemed old to an 18 yr old and looked basically the same 30 odd years later. Looks like another piece of the Beatles has gone.

Yes, another character from the MerseyBeat years has gone. Bob was an institution in Liverpool back then. He ran a 'tight ship' at the Cavern and it only took a minor infraction to get him going. We all knew this and consequently, on occasion, would bait him. For the most part it was done in fun and he took it that way.
My cousin, Iris, dated Bob for a while, in the early sixties. Iris called me after going to his home for the first time. She said "Chris, you'll never believe it! He's got Liverpool Echo's piled all over the bloody place." It appears that Bob, being his own biggest fan, had kept every newspaper that his name had ever appeared in, and they were piled in ceiling high stacks throughout his house. We both laughed for several minutes. I could see the picture in my mind: Iris weaving her way around mountains of newspapers trying to find were Bob was hiding.
I'll always remember hearing his introduction to the Fab Four, "Turn the hi-fi high and the lights down low, its time for the Beatles show."
Although he never played or sang a single note, Bob Wooler was a very important part of the MerseyBeat legend and always will be...
