How Old Were You When You Got Your First Rick?

While I dreamed of owing a Rickebacker since February 1964, it was not until I was 48 years old that I realized this dream. My first and most cherished Rickenbacker was a Model 350.

I was 30. Hit a milestone - buy a Rick. Hope that's not true...I've got a couple years to go before I hit 40, and I don't want to wait that long for my next one.

Peter, I consider myself lucky to start when I was 13 (in 1979) to get my first 4001LH. Since then it's been an '87 610/12, an '89 370/12RM, a '92 4001CS LH, a '72 4001LH, a '68 370/12 and latstly a 360/12CW. Some of these are in other trusting hands now, still getting it done!!!! I'm not done buying yet, either.

I believe I was 30 when I got my first RIC; a 260 in Fireglo.

I was 20 when I bought my first 4001. Up until then, I was borrowing a friend of mines every once and awhile. I'm now 50. Seems like it was just yesterday.

I didn't get my first RIC until Sep 98 (was ordered in Apr 98) when I was 46. However, I didn't play any guitar between 1967 and 1997.

My nephew was 7 when he got his first RIC, a Model 1000. I found it at a garage sale and gave it to him as a Christmas present. Sometimes I wonder if he isn't a better player than I am.

I first wanted a Rick when I saw John and then George with those two beautiful guitars back in 1964, when I was 12 (wait; don't do the math yet...)

On Dec. 12, 1998, I married my lovely wife... and on Christmas Day of that year she surprised me with a combination Wedding/Christmas present: a new 360/12V64 Fireglo! (It was and is the greatest Christmas gift I have ever received - more impressive than any red wagon or Red Rider BB Gun!) So I was 46 years old when I got my first Rick.

Since then we have added a 325v59 JG to our collection, and so we now own two fine examples of those beautiful guitars I first saw so many years ago.

Three weeks ago I celebrated my 50th birthday!

What will the next half-century bring...(?)

Richard: Nope, my guitars are right-handed (my basses are all lefties..yes, it IS weird.) Out of necessity of not having six-string left-handed stuff around, I just learned that way (a long time ago.) So I guess I am ambidexterous. I have seen your 360/12CW LH on the 'net and it is VERY cool. If I ran across any pre-1972 left-handed Rickenbacker guitars or basses, I would be doing what I could to acquire them....

I was 22 when I got my first Ric last August. I'm going to be getting a Mandolin as my next purchase, but after that, I'll probably start "the long save" towards a Ric 12.

I was fortunate enough at 17 with all my saved pounds from my first job, looking for a rickenbacker bass to find a 1964 4001S. Told to buy an old one cause "they are the best" The moment the case was opened and I saw that white finish was still one of the most special moments...3 months later(now 18) another 64 4001S came up.....I,d been saving hard and was again fortunate to be first there with the money....20 years on, and they are still with me. I now truly realise how lucky I was. Timing as they say (and we rhythm guys know) is everything!!!

Like Peter McCormack I was about 18 when I decided I wanted a Ric. I had persuaded our lead to get a 330 rather than a strat. I left the band just after that and never got entusiastic enough with other bands to take the step to a ric. I was 52 when I bought my first ( two actually ) a sh360/12 and a new 4003 then 4 months later I found a sh370/6 pining for a new owner so I took it home and havent stopped grinning since. Icanstate categorically that ( as a former bass player) owning a ric has improved my playing skills on 6 and twelve strings dramaticaly. Superb machines

I was thirty-four when I bought my first Rick. Like many of you I wanted one after tuning in to view the Beatles that epochal February night. A shining, new 325V59 JetGlo, it was. It wasn't until twelve years later that I bought the second: a shining, new 360V64 FireGlo. I own several guitars and I play them all, but the beauty, sound, and playability of these Ricks makes them my favorites.
