I've been offered first shot at a '72 4001. I don't know the finsh or the condition yet because I'm not going to be able to see it until the weekend.
What would you expect one to go for if it had some minor checking, no huge nicks, scrapes or buckle rash with all original parts?
Your help on a ballpark cost would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Being a 4000, it will easily go for over $1000. '72 was about the year they went from neck-through to set-neck,,,I wonder which this one is. I love mine ('68), but it has seen many mods/butcher jobs/restores, so not much original left, but it is still my main workhorse. I take the 4003jg along for backup.
Has he given you any price on it? If not, start him off at about $800 and see where it goes from there. Good luck.

Well, first off, Bob is right. It's a 4001 (I've gotta learn to read) different beast that could go for a pretty penny.
Saxon, the 4000's were neck through untill around 1972 - then they went with set necks, but only on the 4000 and possibly some 4001s basses. Your 4003 is neck through. At a guess, $1900-$2150...
As Steve's mentioned, (hehe), the forum-renowned 72' I sold this year went for $2047 - a respectable price, considering she didn't have her original Grovers.
It was a Burgundy, however.
Standard-3 finishes will tend to pull a little less, so it seems.

I'm worried that it might be a little hard to rationalize to my lovely wife - what with two kids in daycare, still paying for the 4002 and a custom Marchlewski on the way that's going to have to be paid for too! But I gotta hope that there's always room for one more Ric!!!

OK, it's Jet-Glo, doesn't have the original case and is in about 8 out of 10 condition and it's missing a couple of screws from around the pickguard and on two of the tuners. I've talked him into lending it to me for a week or two (he's a friend of a friend) to get a handle on it - I should have it in my hands for next weekend.
But darn, he still won't let me know what price he'd like. I think he's hoping I'll offer more than what he thinks it's worth. I'm thinking of going $1,500.00 CDN if it sounds good at rehearsal next week just to get his perspective.
