"Nate....if you want a 3rd pickup for your 4001/4003 you can get a Bart that mounts in the mute cavity....you may have to route a little but nothing too major and it's not visible if you switch it back to stock."
Would it be a j bass pickup? I'm all for a Bart pickup. The bass I orderd will have three Bart j bass pickups on it.
Anyone have a pic of what this would look like?

Here's a link...they list it as being made for in the mute cavity. I don't know if it is made specifically for the mute cavity or if Bart just gives a jazz p/u a different part number for the Ric application.

Jeff Rath has some pics of a non-Bart jazz pickup he installed in the mute cavity on one of his Rics. I'm sure if he sees this he will post a pic or just drop him an email....I'm sure he'd he'd be happy to pass on what info he has.
Jeff....that would be a nightmare
. And Steve, thank goodness that him and his 2 brothers are well beyond that phase.

actually the jazz bass pickup is easier to install than the bart pickup ... the bart is louder but it requires a little wood working to fit it in ... I like the tone of the Seymour Duncan 1/4 pound jazz neck pickup in the nute cavity ... it is a reversable mod ... I wire it into the neck pickup volume control ... then I run the neck volume at 8 ...
here's the bart ...
here's the jazz ...

here's the bart ...
here's the jazz ...

Hey Sean....I was afraid you were hiding in the bushes outside of my house. I have been staying inside since this was posted on the Forum
.
Honestly, I wouldn't pay more than $3K or so for one. Not that I don't think it is worth it but any more than that and I'd be thinking of getting multiple Rics instead of just one.
Luckily I ordered early and the price was the normal good-dealer-discount from Rickenbacker's MSRP. I've already had a few interesting offers for it but unless someone offers some seriously wacky money it will be growing old with me.

Rath, I like the showing pole pieces of the SD J pickup. The only bad thing is I don't like to have something odd and out of place on my things. Like the Bart pickup. Well, for me the others would have to be Barts to even it out and I don't want to do that. I would still try the J pickup though... it seems unseen back there. I am more of a trebeley kind of sound... would a bridge pickup fit back there?
