I took mine to practice again tonight and I must say that since I spent some time working on the setup I am more impressed with it. The tone is huge! I don't know if it is just the Ric humbuckers or that there are three of them but it sounds "fuller" than my Bartolini shod 4003's. I still wish I could get the action a tad lower but it will do for now. I love the feel of the unfinished neck also.....not that it is better, just different.
I can say that I partially understand Lemmy's need for the pickup surround/cover. I'm a finger player and feel lost without my trusty thumb rest (the pickup surround). It feels odd not having my anchor/reference point.
BTW...Sean, the faux pickup cover is just on Lemmy's. I read somewhere that he was uncomfortable without it so he had it added.

No Bartolinis for Lemmy! I love the way the Barts sound in my 4003's but the p/u setup in the LK is perfect the way it is. It really came alive after lowering the action some and raising the bridge p/u. Now with all three p/u's on it screams.
I'm not sure what my issue is with the neck. I have it pretty close to where I'd like it and it plays fine. I filed the nut which helped quite a bit. Basically with the neck set flat I get some buzz from frets 1-6....so I have to raise the bridge to compensate....so the action is raised. If I add a little relief I can lower the bridge some but because of the relief the action is a tad high. I think I am maybe trying too hard to get it set up like your V63 which may not be possible
. I have it about the same as my other Rics but since it needed tweaking some I figured I'd keep working it to get it as good as possible.
My 4003s8 is a whole other story.....since it was apart for refinishing I can't get a good setup on it at all. I'm not sure why either. It just doesn't seem to be responding well to any adjustments. Oh well....
It probably comes down to the fact that I don't really know what I am doing. I have been setting my Rics up for years just by feel and taking my time. I'm not well versed on if specific measurements should be made and, if so, where. I just pretty much taught myself through trial and error so I may be approaching things all wrong.
Jeff you should open a "Ric Lab" at your photo lab so I could just drop off my basses and a credit card and not drive myself crazy....
