Personally I dont think he needed to apologise except to pacify a voracious media circus..
He did nothing wrong.

It is very difficult to offend someone. Usually it is a case that they choose to be offended by taking a position .

When you balance the reported remark against the joy they brought to people , before during and after that episode its hard to see that they (he) did anything wrong

In a PC world sometimes one cannot state the obvious. At the time The Beatles were better known than Jesus in many parts of the globe. It was a fact that was unacceptable to the PC crowd of that era. BTW, I am RC and believe in Jesus.

It is similar to the Ron Nasty episode.

The slightly deaf journalist heard "God,", when actually it was "Rod." Rod Stewart, in fact, would not become popular for several years.
