Considering what Kent said, "sorta on the pricey side for the 500/1", I would seriously consider Stuart's idea.

I'd consider an Epiphone Viola as an option. I'm thinking about getting one. Ronn Roberts here on the forum has said good things about them. Obviously nothing beats the real deal but, for around $400-450, the Epi isn't a bad option.

yup... Epi Viola is probably the way to go as long as the band is a casual tribute thing and not one of those complete detailed recreation things.

I also see this....

but cant find any pix of it.

OK, ready to take some hits here, but some of the cash-challenged folks who simply MUST have the "look" are modding the Jay Turser knockoffs to good (visual) success.

Glad I got that off my chest.

this turser has the look, but if its anything like other Tursers I've had the misfortune to pick up its not even worth the $272 retail price.

Alex did you get one?
I have and old sixties one. I like it but its no where near close looking enought for a tribute band. I got a Rogue and had good success in modding it to a near Beatle bass.
I want a black Turser now. It obviously will not be a tribute band machine and its not intended to be. I do plan to mod it to the same level as my Rogue. However it will have a silver guard and control panel.
I have a black twelve string Strat that I put a surf green pickguard and controls on. I also have a Mystic black six string Strat that I changed the pickguard to cream pearloid along with cream controls.
I want a black Duo Jet with gold guard and hardware so a black bass seems a natural here. They would look being played together. Babies in black.
