Black parts Question

Post by porge »

OK - I just snapped up a black-parts MG 330 of evil-bay for $685usd that I'm thinking of changing in a few respects (trapeze or vibrola, gold guards, stovetops).

Whilst I'm not a fan of blackparts - I kinda like the MG/BP mix, but I have some questions none-the-les. Can you strip and replate the tailpiece, and is there an accepted way to do it? Has anyone tried "converting" the logo (I assume raised logo) by painting it? Am I just plain old stooopid for thinkin this could be done?

Thanks

You can powder-coat the hardware. And yes, you can paint the raised letter TRC and then paint the letters another color.

This used to be white with black letters. I did it myself and I am certainly no genius and I think it looks quite good...

It looks terrific, Brian.

Indeed! I'm hoping going the other way (black to white) will be just as easy....maybe even "gold & black"? Hmmm...

Bargain or what?

Brian - what kind of paint did you use? Automotive lacquer? Spray can?

Andrew: here's the hot setup:

Black lacquer from a spray can for the background. Then use an artist's ACRYLIC (latex emulsion like Liquitex or a craft acrylic paint) for the lettering (white or silver). That way, if you goof up, you can wash off the acrylic and start again.

If you want white lettering on black, paint the TRC with black lacquer as above, and using #320 wet or dry sandpaper--wet--wrapped around a small block of wood, sand the paint off the letters. Nice, crisp white letters on a shiny black background.

I just used Krylon Fusion paint......they claim it bonds "better" to plastic. It was the same price lacquer so I figured I'd give it a shot. For the lettering I tried doing it with real silver leaf first and it didn't come out so well so I ended up using a silver leaf paint pen and it worked great. The firm foam tip was pefect for just hitting the top edge of the raised letters. They had them in loads of colors at my local crafts store (JoAnn Fabrics in case you have that chain in your area).

The whole job only took me 15 minutes in labor (if that).
