Welcome Chris!

A lot of us lose the PU cover. And I agree that Ricks have an unfair rep regarding their tonal range. Those who say Ricks have "no bottom" are full of **** and/or ignorant.

I flats on my 75 4001, and it has tons of bottom. But I recall the few times I used it with RW's on it I had people commenting that I had a great low end sound. So I just don't buy it that Ricks can only "sound like Ricks". Closing the tone pots removes much of that "clank" that some people find "Ricky"...

Now, I love my 4001, but recently bought a Laredo. While not as tonally diverse it suits me well, and with the more modern/strong truss rods I'll be able to sue my favorite bridge cables (Fender 9050 ML's) without worrying like I do with the 4001. Eventaully I might go back to RW's on the 4001 to have a radically different sounding bass - but the flats on the 4001 are pretty fresh, so I won't be taking them off soon.

As for feeling "intimidated" here, please don't. This is a fantastic forum, and anyone who plays can contribute what they know. There are probably a lot of folks who have benefitted from the "faker alerts" that frequently arise around here.

Speaking of strings, Edski, I found DR sunbeams to be my favorites with a nice smooth, sliky feel and w/good harmonics and mids.(med. 45-105)Tried at least 30 different RWs over the years and settled on these. The A and D strings that came on my rick were to thin for my liking, though they felt nice.

The dinosaur was funny but about ten years too late, the times they are a-changin'. Now see what you've started again?

But what was really funny was the caption: This guy liked flats!

Hey, we're all kindred spirits, linked by our love of Ricks. Image Flats, Rounds...to each his own!

I am the guy on the forum who is usually trying to convince the others here to modernize ... use new basses, play new music, play 5 string basses, use round wound strings, and use a bass pod ...
