"Bongo" Bob Starkie

Post by ozover50 »

I caught a small part of a 30 year anniversary special on 70s Aussie band Skyhooks last Sunday and I was sure I spied a Rick in there somewhere.

After a lot of searching, I found what I was looking for - "Bongo" Bob Starkie on a Melbourne rooftop during the filming of a clip for "This Is My City", with a Rick in hand:

And yes..... he is wearing a wetsuit and flippers!!

He usually played a Tele or LP, so this is a bit special.

I can pick the chord but not the model. Three toasters, f-hole and what may be an Accent(?) tailpiece. So, experts, what say ye?

Thanks for the model of the guitar, John. The neck looks full scale so I didn't think it was a 325.

Don't know where Bongo's nickname came from, Bob, but he sure as hell didn't play them!!

The ocean's in the other direction, Andrew. The shot was taken looking east. Here's the other half of the photo:

It's sort of looking up Collins Street. The low white tower just left of centre is the T & G building. To the immediate left is the Reserve Bank building. The tall building to the left of that is Nauru House and the one under construction is the west (ANZ) tower of Collins Place. Immediately in front of it is the CRA building, which was knocked down to make way for 101 Collins Street.

Guys, you can now amaze your friends with your knowledge of Melbourne!! Image

Howard, look closely, you'll notice that there's only 1 dot at the 12th fret. Another giveaway to a short scale.

"The ocean's in the other direction, Andrew"

I was referring to the attire!

I may be wrong, but Darren from Guitar Emporium may have owned that rick at one point, and sold it 3-4 years ago for a "pucking portune"

As in Ringo, Bob? Don't think so!! He was born out the back of 'woop woop' in New South Wales.

Melbourne's current population is around 3.8 million. And the skyline has certainly changed since that photo was taken!!

Maybe he'd just been doing a bit of inner-city 'snorkelling', Andrew!
