I Feel Fine---I hear something

Post by Scastles »

Okay, this may sound nuts but as the feedback is fading at the opening of IFF, there sounds as if there is an open vocal mike, and very, very faintly you can hear someone say something, actually it sounds like a one word expletive. This is only audible on the version of the Parlophone Past Masters CD, not on the remixed Capitol version. Can anyone else hear this? I sware I haven't dipped into the punch bowl...well, not yet anyway.

What I hear is a 'shush' sound or....something similar to it, if you get my drift.
I might add it is approx. 5 seconds into the intro/feedback.

According to What Goes On:

0:05 : Cough and a click sound. Also reported as "an obscenity", and "someone spitting", "something mechanical, e.g. a WahWah pedal", "finger sliding down guitar neck to get to proper chord" and "snares being set on or off the drums".

Doesn't sound like a cough or any of the other purported sounds but at least I wasn't hearing stuff

Perhaps the feedback from a late night curry?
“I say in speeches that a plausible mission of artists is to make people appreciate being alive at least a little bit. I am then asked if I know of any artists who pulled that off. I reply, 'The Beatles did.”

I have I Feel Fine but I don't have the copy in contention. But I have heard about this before. Most heads seem to think its a snare left on and the feedback rattles it.

John, haven't heard of 'What Goes On' but it sounds interesting.
Dan, the presence on it (the mic) sounds more 'human' than instrument, but who knows, bizarre sounds come out on recordings from a lot of different sources all the time.

Perhaps one of the Four wasn't feeling so fine?

It might have been the curry, Paul. Maybe it was flatulence. Can I say that? Oops, too late now.

Flatulence is nothing to be ashamed of. It's why curry was invented. But we colonials never understood.

Oh, I doubt if I am ashamed of it. If I were I need to apologize to certain folks. Hopefully, what I hear on IFF is curry-less.

Alan Pollock documents this "strange little noise" in his notes.
"This effect is immediately followed by a strange small noise, and then comes the intro proper, a section of eight measures in length that is later quoted again almost verbatim in the second half of the guitar solo section:"

Also, here are some additional notes.

Still others comment
Capitol remix opens with drumstick clicks, and John saying "It's not enough"
0:06
Cough and a click. * NEW * Also reported as "an obscenity", and "someone spitting", "something mechanical, e.g. a WaWa pedal", "finger sliding down guitar neck to get to proper chord"
0:12-0:14
Snares on the drum kit resonate to the sound of the guitar amps, before the drums come in
0:48 * NEW *
Most voices sing "She's so glad", one sounds like they've sung "He's" or "I'm" instead!
End
In the fade out, people report hearing a barking dog. It's not a dog, but Paul freaking out and making woop/woof noises. Very realistic, but no dog!
Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm

Peter, great insight!...and all I thought I heard was one word at the :05 mark. Now, books and supposed expertise aside, what do you really think you hear? Keeping in mind none of us were there.
