Hey guys,
Would anyone happen to know if there are any significant differences between the pickup in a 1976 3001 and the pickups in a 2004 4004Cii?
I'm wondering if it would be worth it to put a new one in the 3001. Thanks for any input.

In my '75 Rickenbacker catalog, the 3001 is described as having a 'hum-cancelling" pickup. I assume that means that the pickup is a humbucker (double coil) design similar to the later HB's found on the 4004C family. As far as the differences go, I would guess that the newer HB's are hotter. Sergio? The 3001 pickup appears to have the same shape as the newer one, so a drop-in replacement is probably possible. Your 3001 would probably sound pretty nice with a newer HB.
Hey guys. I'm your man. I've got a '76 3001 and a '00 4004 CII that I play regularly. First, no, you can't just drop a 4004 pickup into a 3001. The pickups on the 4004 are wider than the 3001s pickup so some routing would be in order.
Second, the 3001s pickup is WAY hotter than the 4004's two. Believe me, I was as surprised as anyone, but there's no contest, not even close. My 3001 is easily half again as loud as the 4004, which is pretty amazing considering the 4004's got 24 years on it.
The two are completely different in sound, both are amazing (kinda like a '67 Vette vs. an '05 Porsche) both totally bitchin', albeit or vastly different reasons (except for the raw power of course).
