Neat, petite!!

I'm beginning to wonder whether you've ever slept at any time since the age of 18, Paul!

Dale ...and yes, you Paul,

Both have woodies bigger than mine.

My son was still in diapers the year he received two large 'Toy Story' figures for his birthday. He told his grandmother, "I got a Buzz and a big Woody".

We will NEVER forget it.

OK, here's the next installment, brief, but with a SURPRISE for all.

This past couple of evenings, I finished the sanding and detailing and pulled the truss rods to check on their condition and re-tape them.

The following pictures show the rods, the components to the twin truss-rod system, and how they assemble into the guitar. The bearing plate is a chunk of 1/4" thick aluminum bar stock, hand-made and hand-fitted to this guitar. I believe it's T3, judging by its medium hardness. T6 would be too hard to file as aggressively as this one was filed, but I could be wrong on this minor point.

The rods themselves are taped with vinyl tape along their inner faces only, to help the halves to slide better against each other.

The adjustment nuts are known in the hardware trade as "coupling nuts" and are available from McMaster-Carr as part number 93525A283. These are identical to the RIC nuts except that the wrench size is 5/16", not 1/4". This size will fit the majority of guitars, however.

Then, as I began scraping the paint from the inside of the "cat's eye" sound hole, I scraped the JG and uncovered--midnight blue, or a reasonable facsimile thereof.

So, apparently what happened is that the original burst was stripped and the guitar painted Mid Blue. Then, later, the Mid Blue was stripped (everywhere but inside the soundhole) and the guitar was refinned in JG--twice. So this will be its FOURTH refin since 1968. Is it back to the future or forward to the past? Doc!!!

Paul, it looks like you've got it stripped down beautifully. Will you be able to remove the overspray from the body cavity at the sound hole?

If it were my guitar I would be going nuts on what color to refinish it in. I love all the vintage colors pretty much but would lean toward fireglo or somekind of burst, if it were possible. If not, Mapleglo.

Bill, it'll be Autumnglo, as mentioned in one of the earliest posts.

As of this afternoon, the pickup polepiece routs have been cleaned up and the paint has been removed from the soundhole by a combination of scraping and sanding.

I'll post pics of these operations in the next installment, which will cover the task of refretting.

Make it slightly different from Autumnglo, Paul, and call it 'Jingleglo'!! Have it ready for David at Christmas and it will be entirely appropriate. Image
