High gain pickups, just curious

Hello, this question is more out of curiosity(sp) than dire need, but what is the relevant information concerning the high gain pickups on the 360, 330 etc.? What makes them have their unique sound, or are these just standard single coil pickups, which are all basically the same. What would be the big differences between these single coils, and say, a strat's. And is there anything that makes the humbuckers that were on the 220 unique? What factors more into the "ric" sound, the body and construction of the body or the pickups?
