Great solo. I mix and match the three recorded versions. I do the album version for a few parts and some of the stuff from "Different Stages". I improvised it when I first tried it out but it ended up being close to the "DS" version. I have no idea when the hell he is doing on "ESL". Just amazing.
Ged uses his pinky on the chords in "Force 10" and "Animate". It's not very often he uses it but he does use it. I have small hands so I use it all the time.
Ged's style is very predictable at times. He does use the same moves alot. All over "Fly By Night" he uses the same fill. He does his patened triplet on every song on "Power Windows". He used moves from "Vapor Trails" and put it in stuff from "Feedback". If you lean just a few of his moves you're set for a lot of other stuff.
His "strum" stuff he started on "Counterparts" has helped my style alot. I can do triplets with one finger after learning that. It works amazing with chords and helps with songs that ends with one chord strummed on end for 30 or so seconds.
He is my bass hero. Just a god is my eyes and ears. I also play over the neck pickup like that. My havd "floats" with no support. Small pic... sorry.

Already got a metronome and a drum machine. I use them every now and then. And i try learning some swampy blues tune or something every now and then. Something on the swing to help with timing.
Charly theres nothing wrong with chords... as long as you know how to use them. Besides... we have to make the guitarist fight for his job or theyll get sloppy on us. Once they do that well just have to break out the piccolo bass and teach them a lesson.
Im starting to think the "Geddy Lee" fan club is a gang or something. Theres a test to get in. Asks you how many rush cds you own... if your a bassist, and if you have a revolver. No comment on what the gun is for. (charly???) J/K dude.

Why does it happen? Because it happens - Roll the Bones !!
Chords on the bass are old hat, McCartney even did it. Don't let Lemmy hear you say anything bad about bass chords, LOL.
My Rickenbacker 4001 has probably had as much Rush played on it as Geddy's in the last 25 years--- Geddy didn't turn me to the bass, but anchored me there. I owe a LOT to him and the band.
I don't think that I've ever encountered anything that has been more fun to play than Rush (on the bass that is)...in my local band here at home we are in the throws of preparing a 'Rush Set' for our fans, they really dig it too...

Poor ol' Geddy gets bashed enough around here for choosing Fenders over Ricks! I gotta stand up for the guy.
Anyway, my favorite runthrough of Freewill is the live version on Exit Stage Left. That's some roarin' awesome Rick tone right there. Good stuff. That is, if you're in the Geddy/roundwound string club, hehe.

I play chords when I want to annoy people, haha!
I went through my lead bass playing phase years ago playing chords and playing way up on the neck until one day one of the guitarists whom I respected highly said to me "Bob why don't you just grab a Tele and get up here and play along with us?" haha! It made me angry but I never forgot it because he was right. I gradually learned how to play bass after that. I can still go crazy and wow people if I want but I save it for solos now.

It depends on the kind of music one is playing, though. I do use the whole fingerboard and sometimes play chords and double stops in our music.
