Teen Idols

Before merseybeat and the moptops came along, I can recall the charts here in UK being dominated by those who were ultimately classed as teen idols.

I always liked Bobby Vee still do, Del Shannon, Tommy Roe and of course the britsh acts Billy Fury,John Leyton,Eden kame , Marty Wilde and of course eventually a knight of the realm, quaint tradtion we have here, Sir Cliff Richard.

I sometimes think these acts are diamisseas lightweight but Bobby Vee is still recording to this day though on his own label his last relaese in 2002 was superb, the poignant "Whatever Happened To Peggy Sue" with lyrics by one Sir Tim Rice is brilliant backed by the Vees, in essence his sons, this track is finely crafted the lyrice so poignant to all of us who conrtribute to this part of Peter's forums..
To quote just one line " whatever happened to peggy sue is what happened to me and to you, times to be happy ,times to be blue that's what we all knew"

Anyone want to hear it.

Let's hear it for Bobby Vee and such like they made some fine recordings.

As I mentioned earlier in another thread, I saw The Vees live, backing up Beej, the lead singer for The Suburbs...

Bobby Rydell!! He's still going around. I've got a CD - "Now And Then" - 10 jazzy classics and 10 re-recordings of his bigger hits - "Volare", "Do The Cha Cha Cha", "Swinging School", etc. Good stuff!!

I always liked "The Night has a Thousand Eyes" Bobby Vee, I always liked Bobby Darin too. Del Shannon was great, Here she comes, that little town flirt. Gotta keep searchin' searchin'. Hats's off to Larry.
Who had the original hit of Volare? I remember listening to that song when I was really young had to have been before 1959 I would say. I loved it and would run to the radio and stand on the hassock so I could put my ear near the speaker when it came on. I don't think Bobby Rydell did the original did he?
How about Freddie "Boom Boom" Cannon? although he was not really a teen idol, Tallahassee Lassie, etc. He was a good Boston boy.

I think you're right, Bob. Rydell's was certainly the hit version of the era. I've always loved Bobby Darin's "Splish Splash", "Multiplication" and "Mack The Knife".

Yeah I thought it was a foreign name too, never knew his name and have not heard that version for a long time either.

Domenico Modugno made number in the States with the song, his was the original, Dean Martin made number 15 both in 58, In the Uk 2 other versions as well as those made the charts, one by surprisingly Charlie Drake a sort of slapstick Brit comedian which we have mentioned before and a version by Marino Marini(just shows how many Italians in UK)Dean's was the biggest hit in UK made number 2.

Forget Him by Bobby Rydellwas covered here in the 80's by Billy Fury just as he was starting a comeback of sorts, turned out to be his last single as he sadly died of an heart attack. My opinion surpassed the original.

I saw Freddie Cannon about 4 years ago on a package tour that was headlined by Bobby Vee, nevet really liked Cannon but I have to say he looked very good.

How many Bobby's were there on the scene? While they may not have all been teens at the height of their career. Were there any more?

1. Bobby Rydell
2. Bobby Vinton
3. Bobby Vee
4. Bobby Curtola (perhaps less well-known)
5. Bobby Darin
