Comporessor - Boss CS2 or CS3?

If a compressor is set correctly, then you wouldn't need to turn it on & off, so why not use a studio compressor. You usually have more user control & better quality than your average stomp box. A Joe Meek VC3 or VC6 would be worth a go. Hook it up to your amp FX loop.

The Janglebox would still be my no 1 try out though. I haven't tried one yet, but hope to do so shortly. Rave reviews. Bearing in mind that a quality piece of equipment will last a lifetime, then they don't look that expensive to me!

The search goes on. The Boss is widely available (it's GC's biggest seller) and relatively cheap. But you get what you pay for, and it is woefully inadequate compared to many alternatives.

Pedals: Judging from the testimonials, which all glow to near meltdown, the Jangle Box is IT. I do not own one yet.

I do have a MAXON CP-101, which is not too bad a unit. I also have an ART VLA rackmount stereo compressor unit, which is very, very good. If the Jangle Box can match up to it, It would be even better. Soon, I'll order one and do a comparo.

Tony has it right. Because JangleBox adds a gain stage and is voiced somewhat bright, the high end won't roll off... in fact, it sustains extremely well. That's what adds the jangle, imo. Well, that and a Rickenbacker. lol!

The JangleBox is by far a better unit. I have used Boss, not quite as good. And some of the lesser named units mentioned are unknown to me, so I can't say, but Steve has a great product!

Try a BOSS CS-3 set (l to r) at "12:00", "12:00", "12:00", "1:00" if you're looking for The BYRDS sound. I really like my own CS-3.

So what might be a fair price for a good condition CS-3? I have one, but am seriously thinking of selling it. Anyone??

For a CHEAP compressor, I really like my DOD Milk Box. I paid $35 for it.

CS-3 street price is $88.00 new.

This is a bit out there, but if anyone is looking for a multiFX thingie, the Tonelab and Tonelab SE have a pretty good comp built in; also a wide range of reverb types and a killer programmable multi-head slap back echo.

If you want REALLY CHEAP, I use a Danelectro Surf'n'Turf - it's no Janglebox, but in conjunction with a French Fries auto-wah, it's instant disco, and tames my somewhat erratic strumming style.

Seriously, I've never really 'got' compressors - this little Dano unit is the first one I've ever owned which does what I think it ought to.

David, do you play a 12? It sounds a bit thin and uneven without one. Until you've tried one--and a good one--it's difficult to describe it unless you just think of it as fattening up the tone, sustaining the notes, and evening out your picking variations.

I use it on my Gretsch 6s too; it's become basic hardware lately.

Unfortunately, I don't possess a 12 - 6s only for me. It's the 'evening out your picking variations' that I was going for, primarily - and the Surf'n'Turf does an admirable job at that.

It lives in a Danelectro case with 4 of their other mini-pedals (autowah, octave distortion, tremelo and echo) - fun stuff for not much money, and surprisingly good quality overall.
