Classical rip-offs
Classical rip-offs
Some hits were absolute takes of classical tunes. I can think of three off the top of my head:
Lover's Concerto (The Toys) - A Bach minuet
Never Gonna Fall In Love Again (Eric Carmen) - Rachmaninov's 2nd Piano Concerto
Asia Minor (Kokomo) - Grieg's Piano Concerto in A Minor
Any others come to mind?

Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm

Thanks for these Jerry. I love both of these songs. Nothwithstanding that it is perfectly legal, poor old Bach has been ripped off a few times.

In revisiting some previous topics, I, thought talking of classics, I would share this Clough Classic from 1963 which still sounds great to me 42 years on.
Based on Tchaikovsky's(admit looked up spelling) Piano Concerto No 1, I think it's fair to say he did not expect it to be interpreted this way. Some great Bass on this for you guitar guys.
Dedicated to our Sheena as it's called Red Square.

That's only one spelling for Piotr Iliych's surname...
Tschaikovsky and Chaikovsky are two others. And Piotr Iliych is up for grabs, too...

“I say in speeches that a plausible mission of artists is to make people appreciate being alive at least a little bit. I am then asked if I know of any artists who pulled that off. I reply, 'The Beatles did.”

Yes, recognizable from the first few notes...
(and here, a silly joke was supposed to be)
Nice version, thanx for sharing it Roy...
Paul: i've also seen: Petr, Pyotr and even Peter... and there was a joke that several years ago (a decade or two), some translator "translated" his name as "Peter Teas" ("chai" is Russian for "tea")...

Nothing will get you dead quicker than being deadly serious about yourself.
Howard good call, can't say I recalled it personally and don't think I have it, will check my database to see if it is on one of the many instro compilations I have, but Asia Minor was indeed a hit for Kokomo in 61 mad number 35. Kokomo was someone called Jimmy Wisener and it was a piano led instro.
The Cougars released 4 singles all on a classical theme, but the only hit they had, which at the time upset classical purists, was their version of Swan Lake imaginatively entitled Saturday Night At The Duck Pond made number 33 in charts great single,if you would like it posting let me know. Another release with a great title was Caviare and Chips (Fries across the pond, what Americans/Canadians call Chips we call crisps, don't know about OZ.
By the way Howard do not how far from Perth you are but at one venue in February incredibly within space of three days they have Mike Pender's Searchers and then The Searchers. Expensive though.
