I've ran into the same problem w/ my 1965 4005 ever since I got it 20 odd years ago , after buying her strings & them ending up on my Jazz Bass because of the fit of the E string I just when to a smaller E , I think I settled on GHS 32"-33" set Pressure wounds w/ a 96 E , note I say "I think" because it's been years since I changed them ( oh the shame) & it's long over due but the action is soooo perfect I almost hate to touch the neck , that said the last few notes on the E sound like you're kicking a cardboard box so it's time for something I've been told to try Pyramids , any 4005 owners here use them if so how do you like them?,

BTW another fix I've not tried is to just use needle nose pliers to flatten the E string rather then take a power tool to the tailpiece
