Hello everyone. It is nice to meet you. Andy. Your 4001V63 have 8 dot inlays. Because maybe there are 2 dot inlays on 12th. Please feel relieved. Your 4001V63 is normal.
Well, in history of 4001V63 since 1984, the model never existed that have a position mark on 19th fret. That model was maybe prototype or equipped with 4003S's neck(or fingerboard only) accidentally.
By the way, Andy. Do you know that in 1984-1985(1986?) some 4001V63 were equipped with a pickup that type of magnetized horseshoe similar to original 4001s' before 1969. In short, your '85 4001V63's horseshoe pickup may be a original genuine type. It is very valuable. After about 1986, horseshoe became dummy. In this case it is type of magnetized pole-pieces. Did you examine already?

Andy, you could take it out & undo the four screws on the bottom very carefully. This should give you enough play to separate the baseplate, coil & horseshoes WITHOUT having to desolder the leads.
When the horseshoes are not in contact with the pole pieces in the coil, touch them & the polepieces with a screwdriver. If it's the old style pickup the horseshoes ARE the magnets & magnetize(?) the polepieces in the coil on contact. With the current v63 pickup it's the other way around, the polepieces ARE the magnets & they transfer their field to the horseshoes.
I'd be interested to know your results.

Hi.
I guess.(I'm sorry, I can not have confidence.) If a iron needle adhere to a horseshoe(not pole-pieces), yours is a real horseshoe pickup maybe.
To references, I show the feature of a real horseshoe-pickup in the following. They say that the Horseshoe's magnetism is very weak by nature, and it will become weaker in addition time will pass. And so pickup's volume becomes small or instability. (It seems to have been, actually, a seriousness problem. It was one of main reason of the horseshoe-pickup's specification changing.) Have you felt such a symptom ever?
My 4001V63 was created in 1999. Namely, unfortunately, my horseshoe is a dummy. "4001V63" is my precious and favorite model. I hope your wonderful '85 4001V63's horseshoe-pickup is a type of genuine article. Good Luck!
Thank you.
