Cool-sounding songs on a 4003s8

Post by highway_star »

My guitarist wants me to bring my s8 to practice Friday night to attempt "Superfreak". I tried it out last night and I thought it sounded cool. Then I tried a few other songs and found out that Tina Turner's "Undercover Agent for the Blues" and "Money" sound great, too. Now all I need are a couple of Cheap Trick songs and I'll have a good set worth of 8-string material.

I'm fond of "One", "Sanitarium", "Fade to Black" and "Anesthesia/Pulling Teeth" by Metallica on the s8. It really thickens up the tone and helps alot since we are a three piece. I'm glad to see that someone else is using their s8 regularly!

Oh yeah, Brian! We're not doing any Metallica, but I bet the s8 does sound well on their songs. It's quite a thunderous bass, isn't it? And to think I gave up on mine at one time; now it looks like it may part of the gigging arsenal.

It certainly has a tone that gets noticed. After having mine for a little while I can't understand how they are not more sought after. And aside from the "cheese grater effect" on the fingers it really isn't a problem to play at all Image.

BTW....I wasn't actaually suggesting songs for you....I was adding my $0.02 of agreement that it is a killer sounding Ric for certain songs.

I'm still getting used to playing RW's again on a 4 string...can't imagine what would happen to my fingertips with a 8 string! Image

Have to believe the sound from one of those beast is mighty mighty...

True. I tried playing mine finger-style last night and it worked out much better. I learned that a lighter touch brings out the sounds more. I just hope I don't get blisters from playing it.

8ers aren't for everyone but I think a lot more players would use them if they just gave it a try. The power of the 8 cannot be denied.

If I could just get my hands on one, I would be playing it all the time!! I have to settle for my Hamer 12 until I can find an S8.

Those Hamer 12's are great but I'm trying to keep my "collection" 100% Ric (not that others don't appeal to me but that Rics always appeal a little more).

Ron....another thing I find myself doing alot with the s8 is striking the strings as opposed to plucking them. Not always but it is a good effect with alot of overtones and a chorus like sound.

"Jeremy" by Pearl Jam, which is actually a 12, but sounds good on an 8 as well.

Has anyone ever attempted any Green Day on an 8-string?

I sometimes do "nice guys finish last" and "basket case" on 4003s8, but then I need ten minutes in an oxygen tent while feeling returns to my fingers...

I was in a 3-piece band in the mid-90s and only played Hamer 12-string basses. We recorded a CD on which we had a hidden track of "Little Drummer Boy". The CD was recorded in December, and during a break I was messing around with the tune, using the D strings as a drone while playing the melody on the G strings. The drummer joined in and the technician rolled tape without us knowing. Played it back for us a few nights later, we decided to put it on the CD. Unfortunately it's the song my bass sounds best on. We had some hot-shot Grammy-winning producer who fracked up my bass sound thru-out the whole CD, except didn't mess with this track as it was an afterthought and he couldn't be bothered.
