I think I understand where you guys are coming from. I myself is after the Vox 60's tone but I've played in a Marshall before and my ADV60VTX does model a few Marshall's (ok sure it's not the real thing but pretty close.)
And I must say if you're looking for that exact sound that you're talking about, it's perfect.

I actually never realized before I've had this amp that your tone is mainly your amp. The guitar and the way it's construction is as important but the amp plays a major part.

I must say the Fender sound is also good with my Hi-Gain equipped Rickenbacker.

I'm pleased to hear you say that, Patrick. I'm currently wrestling with a choice between a Fender Hot Rod DeVille 410 or a Vox AC30CC2X. The Vox is nearly double the cost of the Fender and I've got to start spending a bit less at some stage. I'm leaning toward the Fender for that reason. And it is a nice clean amp........

For a mix of classic 60's Vox and Marshall combined (a little more on the Vox side. Loaded with blues it will out-Vox a Vox!) that is military handwired and cost's the same as a PCB AC30CC with blues, try a TOP HAT Club Royal 2X12.

20 watt class A with master volume.

that's why you have to have a few amps.....my wife believes me too.

It's exactly like that one Peter, even down to missing letters! They are going up in price here, but $900 is a lot of $....

I've had Boogie in the past & although the clean sound is amongst the best I have ever heard, the overdrive sound just didn't do it for me at all.
The thing is Jeff, that you can't really compare that Boogie 1x12 combo with the Marshall 100w head & 2 4x12's that I use. I'm not talking about quality, I'm talking about configuration. If we put the two side by side, there would be a bit of a difference in sound! I couldn't even hope to get the sound that I am looking for from a 1x12 combo, no matter how good it was.
'Rickenbacker'...what a name! After all these years, it still thrills me.

Yes. the 18 watter is sweet. It's also a very loud 18 watts (just like an AC30 is a loud 30 watts). There's not great deal of clean headroom but it produces the most gorgeous "Marshall" sound ever. And it's so responsive - probably due to the tube rectifier. It seems to like whatever guitar you plug into it. I was really surprised when I plugged the Rickenbacker into it - it still sounds like a Rickenbacker. Get a copy of the Jam's "All Mod Cons" and listen to the track "In the Crowd"- that's the sound I get !

Hey Karl, thanks for mentioning the Top Hat! I've been thinking about taking the plunge on a Club Royale for a while now, and the sound you describe is exactly what I'm looking for.

Anthony Cary,

Your comments on Mesa are funny. I feel just the opposite. I love the clip, but the clean on mine is not at good as my old Fender DeVille or Ampeg Reverb Rocket. (Those two amps shimmered).

I've got a Heartbreaker, and it sounds great but the clean is not the best. The clip is awesome. (The amp was modified by Trace).

My buddy has a Mark V or IV, I think. (The one with the eq on the head). The clean on that amp really shines.

As for Top Hat, Ethan, if you haven't bought yet, I'd refer you to the Rick dealer in Atlanta that has some really sweet boutique amps. He likes them better than Top Hat.

I've never really gone the boutique route. One, I don't have the money, and two, I'm not a professional musician... So the extra tone or clarity that I'd dearly pay for would be kinda lost...

Take it easy,

JKC
