Who did Pete Townshend play with?

Here is an absolutely terrific vintage photo of Pete. I am hoping that he will make comment. You have to love the switch in the treble position.

There is another pic floating around of Pete playing a RM 1993 12-string, and the headstock is held in place with bolts, nuts and metal plates, LOL. It is the coolest. I gotta wonder how well the guitar played after that repair work..

I'm going to date myself here. I remember the first time I saw the Who on TV. It was the Hullabloo show with the live from England section hosted by Brian Epstein. Pete finished (My Generation) and tossed his Ric to the audience.

Wow, what a memory? I can't even recall what I ate for dinner last night. I saw most of those shows, Hullabloo and Shindig, but my recall is nil. I guess I'm more on the line of ' if you remember the '60s, then you weren't there'

I remember that show because it was the first time I even heard of the WHO, I later saw them at least 5 times live. Memory is a selective thing. I was talking to a friend about the time we saw the WHO at a circus tent east of Cleveland, he remembered every little detail (rushing the stage, etc), all I remember was "The James Gang" opened for them and would later play my senior prom.

The thing I like most about Pete is his English Nose. What caracter it gives him. I saw them live at the Monterey Pop festival. They went on after Jimi Hendrix. Unbelievable, Jimi burning his Strat and Pete tearing up everything on stage, along with Keith destroying his drums and all. So you see Stan, some of us do remember what we did in the 60's. 3 of my most treasured moments were the HW Bowl and Dodger Stadium concerts. Beatles: 64/65/66. We paid $9.00 to a scalper for $6.00 tickets behind the orchestra pit. Talk about screaming girls! I still have my program from the 65 tour, in mint condition. Rickenbacker did a very nice advertisement in it.
The programs were standard through out their American tour, the same for all concerts. Many years ago I went to sell mine to a collector for $50.00, he told me it was a reprint, but very nice and he turned me down, thank god for that.

In the Monterey Pop video that I actually watched earlier today, John Philips from the Mama's and Papa's was saying that Pete and Jimi were having an arguement about who was going to go on first, and Pete won the toss, and the Who went on first. So Jimi pulled out all the stops and burned his guitar to out do them. So it sounds like he (John Phillips) did too many drugs and can't remember the order of things!

Greg: Pete did win the toss, but Jimi went on 1st and upstaged the Who which ****** off Pete cause he felt that Hendrix had stolen his act, with the destruction of equipment and all. Still this kind of stage presentation was very new to say the least and both Groups were mind blowing to use a 60's phrase.

My first recollection of The Who on TV was on the Tom Jones show in the summer of ’68 or 69. They performed Pinball Wizard.

The producers of the CD Box Set have The Who BEFORE Jimi:

The stories have always been that Jimi painted his Strat during Sunday afternoon and had always intended to burn it on stage. Not as a direct reaction to The Who. Why else would he have been carrying lighter fluid and matches with him.
