Excellent decision, Bob. Congrats! I hate to see someone sell a cherished Rickenbacker just to raise some extra cash.

And for the record, I believe you that your Rick came from the factory the way it is.

Yes, it has 4003S features. But RIC had to start somewhere when thinking up the v63. If it were a 4003S that somebody put a bunch of bolt-on parts on after it left the factory, it would have an extra screw hole beneath the truss cover, an extra hole beneath the pickguard cover and extra holes beneath the treble pickup surround. A few months ago you said that there were no extra screw holes.

I think that it was part of the evolutionary process that led to the v63. That does fit the definition of the word "prototype" as it appears in my dictionary:

pro·to·type n.

1. An original type, form, or instance serving as a basis or standard for later stages.
2. An original, full-scale, and usually working model of a new product or new version of an existing product.
3. An early, typical example.
4. Biology. A form or species that serves as an original type or example.

I agree Jeff! Same as the V I posted earlier. Apparently the factory was considering the C64S while still producing the V63 and somehow it got out the door. Things like that just happen at RIC

Play her Bob even after the finish is gone!

I am truly touched by your support both on and off the Forum.

I contribute occasionally to other fora, hi-fi and photography mostly, and I have got to say the degree of knowledge, passion and support shown on the Rickenbacker Forum is without equal. I feel privileged to be a very small part of the community.

Do you know what I did last night? No gig or rehearsal, just 3 hours of joy bonding with the old girl again (the bass I mean, I never intended to sell Debs into slavery!)

Scott- the C64S is alive and well, thank you. It is truly a unique Rick. I can play it for 2 hours without getting a fingerprint on it! The fretboard is perfect, and the neck is straight as an arrow. It is basically in the same outstanding condition that it was in when you sent it to me with one small exception: as you play these, the satin finish gets a little shiny. So the neck and fretboard are a little shiny in places...but that just makes it look like somebody likes it!

Ken,

For whatever reason, and for the life of me, I’m not sure why, you appeared to have some sort of mission to sabotage the sale of my treasured bass.

I have received many emails of support for my position on this matter, but would of course not mention the senders names.

I have worked out a way that I can afford to keep the bass, so the provenance will not be an issue.

The word prototype means many things, and I honestly believe that my bass is just that.

I am sorry that I did not address my comments about you to you, I of course should have done that. For that I apologise.

Maybe now we can draw a line under this matter, metaphorically shake hands and move forward?

Bob,I was and am not trying to sabotage the facts of the history of your bass just a stickler for the truth whatever it may be.I did the same with my bass,wondering if it was a 4000 or converted 4001,All the factory routing is there for a 4001,and have been told that a 60s 4000 would not have this routing,JH also said something to that effect,but Ive also heard different ,without being able to trace my serial # and find out how it left the factory i will never know for sure.Apologies to you for you feeling that you have been attacked and except your apology.As for making a fool of my self I think I managed to do a very good job of that this past weekend at the beach[with strippers] my head still hurts.lpol.[laughing painfully out loud]
