Yes, that's exactly the technique I use Robert! You catch on quick.

Hey, don't you have a Fender SS bass amp for sale?

Well, Rob, that's a bit severe...LOL

Patrick's comments would work well in any bargaining situation and are just good flea-market type common sense.

I don't agree with GC's focus or their marketing practices, but I'm a dinosaur and you can't argue with their success. Instead of us moaning about being square pegs who don't fit their definition of a round hole, why not take what we can and avoid what we don't need or can't use?

I have a GC exactly 1 1/2 blocks from my office. Yep, they suck, and to make matters worse, there's no way in heck you can park anywhere near the place for less than $6 an hour. But I buy some (small) stuff there regularly, and have run across some bargains on bigger stuff.

And they do deal aggressively on used equipment. I got my Tonelab SE and two of my amps there--one new, one used. The TL and the new (VOX) amp I both got for lower than anybody else's advertised price and the used amp was in mint condition at a giveaway price.

But, still, anybody who would buy anything with moving or vibrating parts there, should really do their homework on it first.

There was a large, non-chain music store in my neighborhood in Chicago, back in the '60s. Same unknowledgeable staff catering to kids, same quick-turning SKU focus, same high-pressure, full-retail environment. So it's nothing new, just bigger.

The bigger they are the harder they fall, and I don't think they are growing anymore and their rep is definitely getting worse. But you know what's really going to kill them? Internet sales.

You have to know the product you want, before you walk into GC.

As long as you know that the sales people are not swift in equipment knowledge, they have good deals, form time to time.

I purchased 2 Ampeg SVT410HLF and a PRO 3 head for $1900.00, (same as cash if paid off within one year).

One of the speakers blowed up….

They gave me a brand new cabinet, still in the box. No questioned asked.
