In the early 80s when Ric introduced the 4003 the whole idea was a stronger truss rod system adjustable from the bottom of the neck thats what makes the 4001 and 4003 different as time went on the adjustment ended up, up top again and no need for the two piece guard.

I meant the different truss rod design makes the 4001 and 4003 different.
