Help needed - what to tell my wife

Post by roadking »

I am considering buying a 650 Dakota or Sierra. Since I currently own 6 guitars, I am running out of things to tell my wife when she notices a new one.

I have used:
Oh, I've always had that guitar.
I am only test driving this one.
That guitar? - that's not mine, just holding it for a friend.
I think you were with me when I bought this one.

Any other suggestions I could use?

Happy Birthday Honey !!!!!!

Happy Anniversary Sweetheart !!!!

If you're gonna learn, this is the one you should have.

This was meant for Christmas, but you know how Rickenbacker is backordered (may be the best one)

So, Merry Christmas Baby!!!!!! Image

I'm sure there are more;

I've ALWAYS had SEVEN!!!!! Image

What are the other 6?

350v63MG
330/6FG
Strat AmSe Hot Rod Red
Ibanez S370 Flat Violet
Schecter S1+ Maple Flame Black Cherry
Art & Lutherie - Cedar Top

I should probably sell the Schecter and the Ibanez as I don't play them much - but both are great colors and good looking guitars.

Well Bob, when things really get tough try these.

I was fortunate enough to find this one at a greatly reduced price. The experts say that its resale value is expected to double. After 50, each day is a bit of a gift. I want to be able to play this instrument while I am still able to enjoy it. Life is a five act play and I'm in Act IV. After playing this Rickenbacker, I find that it provides me with so many different sounds that I may be able to get rid of one or maybe even two of the others. For me, this is a dream. While I have not said much about this guitar, I have been considering this instrument for the past 10 years. I have always put other things first and the time seems to be right now to pamper myself a little.
You will need to practice these reasons so that you can express them with conviction. I have researched these reasons for you and my wife tells me that number three is the best of the lot. You can do this Bob. Good luck.
Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm

Hey Bob, didn't you ever hear that ACTIONS speak louder than words? And what about the element of surprise? You've got to do something special for her, something she truly enjoys and is not expecting. Then the next day either do it again or find something else special. About the third day, right in the middle of whatever it is, and about the time when she's starting to wonder what's up, just casually mention your new guitar with no extraneous explanation. You shouldn't get more than a minimal objection, which can be put to rest by the 4th day's activities. You know, if you're really creative, you might end up with a whole room full of Rickenbackers!

tell her the same i tell my wife when i want
another guitar ( i now have seven )
1st: they all have a different sound

2nd: i plan on selling one of the other ones after
i get the new one ( then don't ) sooner or later
she forgets about it or i'm not getting the right $ etc

3rd: start a stash ( i save $ bills ) so when you
want to buy a new guitar you have the money & you
don't have to rob house money. i am currently
waiting for a vox valvetronix to surface to
purchase & i allready have the $'s saved

good luck

Buy her a gift of similar value. For example, when I bought myself a 660 FG, I bought her a Hermes watch. If she's getting stuff too, there will be less reason to object.

Tell your wife it was a gift.... from a girlfriend.
This way her focus won't be on the guitar :-D

All of the above reasons and explanations are assuming you expect to be caught. Some are actually pretty entertaining. Now that my wife is out of the room I'll tell you what I'd do/have done in other situations. Put the 350 MG away and bring out the new Dakota. Stand it kinda behind the others on it's stand. Leave it alone for a week or two(I know this sounds hard but being devious has it's price). Now when she's in the same room, preferably occupied by a magazine or phone call, take it from it's stand and start playing it. She may notice something's different but after counting the forrest of headstocks behind you she'll think it's probably nothing but her fading memory. Most chicks couldn't tell the difference between a Flying V and Model 4080 so this should work for ya. But if your ego needs to see all of your guitars at the same time then you're gonna have to sell one of them.

I have just perfected and executed the perfect plan, resulting in my recent Rick purchase. It does depend on two things:

1: An achievable event/or goal that will trigger the purchase. It must appear to your wife that this is a remote possibility, but you know it's likely.

2: Consistent reminders/persistance/badgering. Talk about it often, send e-mails of pictures of the guitar to her. Time frame: I used 1 year +. After 6 months, I would often say "guess what I bought today?" I would get a glare, and then say "a cd" or some such inexpensive item.

3: When you reach the "goal" that triggers your permission to buy (lightly agreed upon earlier, but often reminded of) increase reminder activity. Begin to talk seriously about purchase. Make purchase!

I followed this exact plan. It wasn't well thought out, but evolved over time. The results were wonderful, though! Patience, Patience Patience!

Reading this is making me cry....with laughter.
I'm not the only one then.
I recently succumbed to a 360-12 carl wilson, lovely.
I've wanted a rickenbacker for about 20 years and couldn't hold off any longer.
I also have a wife and a lot of guitars,we all know they don't always go together.
At the moment the ricky is under the bed and can only be played when she's not around.
Now i've bought effects boxes,4 track tape machines etc without too much fuss,but...the ricky 12 string is so stiking and different looking(headstock)that i think my wife would spot it in the crowd of my other 5 guitars!
So i'm still working on it.
By the way this forum is fab,i've found out so much useful info(done the cap & nut mod allready).
