I think RED RUBBER BALL is one of the great pop singles of all time. Pure Perfect Pop, from the jangly guitar to the great 'no vibrato' vocal harmonies. Yes, the singing was somewhat nasal, but fit the song well. BTW, the follow-up, TURN DOWN DAY, which is not as good (at least not to my ears) was originally called TURNED ON DAY, and is about smoking a joint on a pretty summer's day, but they could'nt get that title past the record company.
Ahh Steve, isn't Democracy wonderful, I put them in the same boat with the Partridge Family...and yes a joint was a a big deal with big law enforcement issues then ....you know, light a joint,(or possess only 1) go to jail or juve.... THE TIMES, THEY HAVE A CHANG..ED
Hummmmmmmmmm,Gotta think about that one... OK, I'm done.....
Agreed...when I do hear the song, it reminds me of being 6 years old and being at Jericho Beach in Vancouver.
It was one of those pop songs (and there are probably hundreds, if not thousands) that I was familiar with as a young kid, but didn't know the name of the song nor the performer...not until Rhino Records began releasing their versions of the "Nuggets" series around 1985.

How much!?!
Bob: I bet you liked "Turn Down Day" for the bass riffs!
Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm

John- Putting The Cyrkle in the same boat as the Partridge Family seems off base to me. The Cyrkle was never packaged and promoted in such a kid-oriented way. In 1966 MOST of the radio pop was innocent ('til Hendrix and Cream arrived)- Beach Boys, Beatles, Spoonful, etc. I think lumping them in w/ an obvious 'TV creation' is to say the least, inaccurate.
