What are you compressing or are you compressing at all? Compressors are hell on monitors. I used to insert them for vox but they were causing a ton of feedback so out they went. It is pretty tough to get them out of the monitors since most of the circuitry in board will end up in the aux or monitor chain somewhere. Compressors can be used but need to be set right with the correct mics and monitor placement. As for pre and post aux. If you are using post aux then your main faders will effect your monitor mix. That may cause a problem if your monitor mix is good then you go adjust your main mix.

Sheesh! Whatever happened to the "WALL OF SOUND? 300+ 15 inch JBL's sitting right behind your ear!

I would have to agree with Bob, it appears to be a BIG stereo. What about "presence"? I believe you should be able to close your eyes and be able to tell where each performer is on stage. A really good set of speakers will do that. Take "A night in San Francisco". It was recorded live and if you sit in the sweet spot at Shelly's Stereo, you can tell how the three performers were arranged on stage! If everything is pounding out of the PA, you would have to twiddle the pans to get an approximation of where everyone is situated. Again, I'm not a pro but this kind of talk improves my knowledge base!

You're right Charlie but I think that's beyond the average sound guy's ability and work ethic unless he's gone to school for mixing.

We're running the drum mics, the bass, and the main board signal through the compressors. Not to severe compression, mainly using the gate.

Not really a stereo, since we're running in mono. Image The main board output is split ny the crossover, and the lows and highs get a channel of the power amp. One channel of the power amp runs the 2 15" cabs in paralell, and the other channel runs the 2 subs (also connected in paralell).

we gate the drums as well ... my lead singer/rhythm guitarist is an engineer ... he owns the pa and he is the one who did the research and put it together ...

Shoot...I bring the smallest amp I have (Blues Deluxe) as few pedals as I can (1-3), plug and play as do the other guitarist and bass player. I can never, ever hear the vocal monitors. I could give a fig what the sound man does. My attitude is, it's only rock and roll. We recently did a show with a "punk-pop" cute boy band. They had more equipment than I've ever seen and sounded as if they were a recording, all processed and compressed. So much for the spirit of punk, much less rock and roll. We gig a lot BTW, more than I want to!
