12-string Rics... 21 or 24?

When it comes to the feel/playability of Ric 12-strings, is there a big difference between 21 frets and 24 frets?

The big difference is in the nut width of the necks. I prefer the wider neck on my 660/12; I found the narrower neck difficult to play chords on.

The nut width is only different on the 660. If you are looking at 360V64's, 350V63's, 620's, Carl Wilsons etc, then the nut width is the same as the 6 string 330/360/s.

I say get both, a 21 fret with toasters & 24 fret with hi-gains!

While not wanting to hijack the intent of this thread, I would add that a 24 fret with a high gain in the neck and a hot toaster (11-12 KOhm) in the bridge is also an option to allow for a bit more jangle and sufficient output. This gives you a nice balance of lows and highs that provides for a very versatile tonality.

21 fret looks better - more space between the pick ups, just more aesthetically pleasing (to my eye anyway).

ya... the question of toasters and possible combo with hi-gains seems to be a big one... and one that I'm very interested in.

Peter, have you ever tried reversing that (putting the hi-gain at the neck and the toaster at the bridge) ? .... kinda like a counterintuitive counterbalance if that makes any sense.

(as for the wider nut width of a 660... thanks, I didn't know that.)

i prefer 24 cause i like to downtune and use a capo but still have 22.

Yes Brammy I have with good results on a 24 fret model.
