Dumb answer, but it's always in the last place you look...

... you might well find it also in one of the cavities of the body (Electronic or PU for the 4004, but also bridge for the 4001/2/3 models).

Generally the serial # is written (or should be written) in the control pocket on ALL instruments leaving the factory.
