J.H., it's not the "right" Rickenbacker, but as you must know, all those places in Columbus Ohio were named after Adolf's cousin (or was he an uncle?), Eddie Rickenbacker. As I recall either Eddie or Adolf lived with the other's family for a time in Columbus. Gotta read up on that for the book.

Paul, as a child Adolph "lived" with Eddie's family in Columbus but not exactly as a family member. His older sister was employed by Eddie's family as a maid and he was allowed to sleep in her room during the winter but otherwise fairly well fended for himself. Their father brought them both to America from Switzerland but when his legs were amputated in a railway accident, he was unable to care for them.

That's the short story. More of this history has been turning up recently.

Randy Hawkins has some pics of the house in Columbus. Unfortunately, it is not in a great neighborhood and might be torn down eventually, right now it is boarded up. Given the history of who lived in the house, I would think it should be saved and put on the National Historic Register.

"Joey is Fender a bad word"?

It's the anti-Rick!! Image

Jacob, I don't hate them, it's just my warped way of hinting that I don't think they are as good as Ricks are.

I don't post or read the Fender forum, but somehow doubt that there are many guys praising Rickenbackers there.

For those of you who aren't into military or aviation history, Eddie Rickenbacker was a famous race car driver who became America's top ace flying for the 94th Aero Squadron in World War One (The Great War). He shot down 24 Huns within the six or seven months that the U.S. was officially involved in that war. Quite a feat, considering the average life span of a pursuit pilot over the trenches was counted in weeks.

Eddie later went on to found Eastern Airlines and was regarded as a national hero. JH might be able to establish the actual relation between Eddie and Adolph, but I believe they were cousins or second cousins.

Somebody just listed a "Rickenbacker Av." street sign on eBay. Somewhat questionable in origin...if you know what I mean, but it would be rather cool.
