I need to be shot.... I played a ric last night. Best ric i ever played. I loved it to death.. and then.... I played a spector... and i think i may of liked it a little more. -tear-

Do they have like Ric-o-Therapy?

Hey Jacob, Ricks are only one kind of bass, haha!

If everybody played the same thing, there wouldn't be much originality in musical sounds, so play whatever your heart tells you to.

I love Ricks more than anything right now because they sound like the tone in my head. I used to think they were one of the ugliest basses around. I used to say "If only there was a bass that sounded that way that I actually liked!"

Well, I guess the body style grew on me, because now they are my favorite.

But I digress, the instrument will always choose you, so follow your instincts, man!

Oh i was kinda just joking. Ill end up with one of both haha. I went over my teachers house just to hang last night. He dug out some of the bassist he keeps up in the cases. Like this extremely awesome Lakland and then that Spector. I got to jam on them both for a few minutes. Loved both of them. Infact i want both of them but you know... all in due time. I also played on his 4001. Which is an amazing bass. I loved it. All 3 might as well play their selfs. But yeah theres the story behind that. I dont have the money for the lakland or Spector like his. So Ric it is. I still want one really bad.

The 1st time i saw a ric up close and personal. I was learning the song Junior Eye's. Black Sabbath song off of the Never Say Die album. As soon as Chip (the teacher) heard it he went and grabed his ric. I looked at the bridge pickup. I was just thinking... that thing looks like shat! Is he serious about this. And then of course I heard it. Things changed. Sence then I couldnt wait to get one. Still cant.

Im a variety type guy. No bass can do it all. And if it could... what would be the fun in that.

I swapped a 1972 Burgundy 4001 for a 1974 Jazz Bass and a Cheyenne II.

Both gone, now.

The Jazz had a neck which warped as soon as I got it (!) and the Cheyenne II's sound I hated, no matter how much I convinced myself I liked it.

I stick with my 76' Precision, an 80's Precision Special (with a J p/u) and my Yam's now.

All relatively mid-range basses, which sound great.

Spectors are just that, (bar the high-end, custom stuff.)

As Jacob states, Ric's aren't perfect. I think we all know this - no matter how much we love 'em.

A craftsman is only as good as his tools, a poet is only as good as his vocabulary, et al et al...

Funny thing is the only bass i like playing more then a Ric is a spector.

I have felt like an idiot since not long after I traded my Rick for the Spector. I've really grown to love it, but I miss the hell out of my 4003.

But life will be good again soon... and I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels like I do about Spectors!

Iv played a few old fender J basses. They are pretty nice.I love my Aerodyne Fender Jazz bass. Its pretty kool. I think if i get another Fretless (hoping to) it well be a Fender J bass. I really want to get a graphit(spelling) neck on one. I played a J bass with one last night as well. I loved the neck. And there wasnt a thing in the world you could do to hurt it. It was pretty kool. Then the 2 lakland basses. one was 4 string freted and the other 5 fretless. Both were really awesome. I loved them. But he got out his... i would say Favorite bass. Which was one of his spectors. And It was just amazing.

Nothing can replace a Ric. But visa versa i suppose. I wouldnt be complete if i didnt end up with one of each.

A player needs a wide variety of basses. Just like an artist needs his paints.

A lot of players eventually end up playing one brand most of the time, same with amps. Also a player will eventually arrive at the place where he gets pretty much the same sound out of most basses unless they are not capable of getting the sound he has in his head. There is also the bass of the month club to go along with the amp of the month club, can get very expensive while you are trying to find your sound. I find Rics to be very versatile, they can get a much wider range of sounds than can a lot of basses.
A good combination in which you get get just about any sound you want is a Ric and a P bass, you don't really need anything else and even needing the P bass is debatable as the new 4003's can sound a lot like them if you want them to.

I have two Ric's, a Jazz, and a Music Man Sting Ray. Also, a C64FG is on it's way. So I think I have everything pretty well covered. I thought about selling the Jazz, but I've changed my mind. That bass plays too well, even though it's been through a lot.

Jazzes are nice basses. I've owned my share, I prefer the P bass a little more though.
