I saw Squire use the white 4001/8 with a potato head live back during the Close to the Edge tour. I believe he used it on All Good People... He might have used it on Roundabout too.
I LOVE the potatohead! I was so disappointed to see the 4003/8 using the regular head, and with all bass machines. Bah!
Squire's 8-string playing on Fish is beautiful.

Chris Squire also used his white 4001/8 on "Going For The One" . This may have been the last time he used it before switching to his Raney 8 string. I'm not sure if John Entwistle ever recorded with his white 4001/8, by the time The Who recorded "Success Story " he had made the switch to his Alembic 8 string. Rick Danko played a Fender Jazz at Woodstock, switching to the Ripper by the time of The Last Waltz, although some studio cuts were recorded for the Last Waltz where he used his fretless Ampeg.

It's SOOOOOO damn big! Also having all big bass machines is just so ungainly.
I like this better for an 8 because it's a bit more compact. But I love the regular headstock.
Or at the very least if they had used guitar and bass machines on the 4001 head style. Or even better, make it like a 12 string Ric!

He used the Rickenbacker 4008 in "Success Story", he acquired his Alembic 8-strings later. 4008 can be seen in "30 Years of Maximum R&B" video/DVD; they're rehearsing with Kenney Jones and Rabbit Bundrick and John plays the riff of "Sister Disco" with it.
