Derek Shulman! Now we are talking! Too bad Ray didn't play a 4001! I was never much into Genesis anyway, but I LOVE Gentle Giant.

Was just listening to them this morning on my iPod....

Great looking bass Dane! And Gentle Giant, one of my favs too. Ray Shulman is one of the most underrated of prog rock bassists. He had a great sound with the Precision he played most of the time. Playing The Fool is my favourite.

David...right on, Giant rules...we did several covers of GG tunes. I enjoyed them all, but Cogs In Cogs was maybe my favorite to play...and our singer could cop Derek's voice so well it was scary...

All the Gentle Giant CDs were just re-released in the last couple of weeks as part of the 35th anniversary of the first album. In glorious remastered sound.

BTW, Rutherford wasn't the only one who combined a 4001 with a guitar into a doubleneck. Martin Briley who played on a last Greenslade album "Time And Tide" had a doubleneck 4001/Stratocaster. Of course I couldn't find a pic but I remember seeing it in an old NME. It looked, well, interesting!

And not all GG cd's, but from In A Glass House to Giant For A Day (1973-1978).

Hey Bill, thanks for the info! Some of the CDs I have are made from the wrong masters! (Well Freehand anyway).

Now I'll have to finish up my collection!

Pekka, the word I've always heard is that the band had to wait for young Ray to graduate from the Royal Academy...when I play my Precision, I've always got Ray and John Wetton in the back of my mind...his violin stuff was equally cool, but then again, everyone in that band played three or four axes. Many people don't know that Kerry Minnear (Giant's keyboardist) graduated (as a percussion major) at the top of his class at the Royal Academy...the same class that Rick Wakeman graduated at the bottom of...

Didn't know that Dane. And you're right about them being multi-instrumentalists. Lots of great photos at their homepage http://www.blazemonger.com/GG/ which show for example Minnear playing bass or Stratocaster or vibes or cello or his keyboards. Their DVD is fun to watch too, Pugwash Weather's expressions are priceless!

I saw them live several times...just the number of instruments on the stage before the show was astonishing. Then they proved why they had brought all that stuff...

Mats Hulden is of course the original (and current) Wigwam bass player. And we don't have to explain to everyone who Jukka Tolonen is, right Dane?;)

I briefly considered buying the Ric 12/bass in the 1970s, but I can't play guitar for ****. Of course, if I'd bought it I'd probably be pretty good by now.
