Mark, there are a number of importers now who carry decent standups (made in China, of course) in both full and 3/4 size, for less than a grand. Just right for trying it out to see if it's "you". There are also a couple of mfrs. who make rockabilly ones with flame paint jobs, candy apple red, etc; sort of hotrod stuff.

EBay is your best bet on these.

I guess I should have specified that this bass will be only for home use, and might end up being a conversation piece as much as anything, sitting next to our piano.

Anyone have experience here with the Takamine b10? Looks like an interesting, but not inexpensive compromise. I would be concerned mostly with how it sounds acoustically.

Jeez, Bob...don't bring any to the party if you're not willing to share...

Marc: no tips or suggestions, but some advice: start doing some push-ups now...even if you're only planning to play it and not move it around, you're gonna need more muscle mass in your arms than typical daily life calls for...

Unless you're already a hod-carrier, in which case I apologize profusely and humbly withdraw my advice...

Just to clarify: a stand up or double bass is an acoustic instrument that looks like a big giant violin and is abbreviated URB.
An electric upright bass is an electric instrument, it is not a double bass nor is it a stand up, it is an electric upright bass or EURB.

You mean like: "Stanley Clarke sure can 'smoke' on that URB!" ?

Stay away from Chinese URB is all I remember...

They're fine if you just want to put them next to the piano.
