Defining the terms

Post by charlyg »

Ok ,let's define the terms, well, maybe we should list them first
We have:
punch, definition, growl, bite, mwah, round(that old EBO into a Sunn with 2x15 sound) "fart" .

Or not, maybe I'm the only one that cares.

Then there's "shock" and "awe"...

See, I knew I would forget some! Although I don't think I would ever want my bass to twang. That is for Telecasters.

You're right, Charlie...but a bass will twang: one of mine did when a soundman knocked it off the stand...I admit it's not a desirable sound in that case...

When refering to Rick basses, lets not forget "Gank" "Clank" and "Honk".

growl is like a jazz bass running one pickup ... smooth is both pickups ... bite is treble attack ... twang is having the bass cut capacitor in and soloing the bridge pickup ... thump is a p-bass ... punch is getting heard through the mix ... fart is when the low end gets lost in distortion ... definition is when others can tell what notes you play ...

Anyone care to define 'wiry tone'?...
A Rickenbacker bass is much like the Jaguar E car - perennially ultra-fashionable.

When asked about how the Rick bass sounds different, my description has always been "Gronk" -- I guess somewhere between growl and honk. That's with rounds, of course. With flats, it's more of a "Plonk."
