Or...maybe Orbison was trying to write "Day Tripper" and came out with "Pretty Woman" instead. I defy anyone to disprove it...

Good theory, Dane..then he could have written both and made a combo out of it, 'Pretty Day Woman Tripper'.

Well, "oh, pretty woman" came out at least year (almost 2 I think) before "day tripper", so it would seem that Lennon or someone was trying to play Orbison's tune. That and they have always said they were fans of his. And I thought they heard him writing it while on tour.

Mashing both songs up together is pretty funny!

"Pretty woman

Got a good reason

Walkin' down the street

For takin' the easy way out."

Certainly John and Paul were influenced by their buddy Roy, but I really dont see any more relationship between "Oh, Pretty Woman" and "Day Tripper" than I do between "My Sweet Lord" and "He's So Fine".

Kent, you're inferring plagiarism. It can't be! Artists lifting music from other artists!

haaa.... Stan, you're right. 98% of pop songs lift this or that from other songs.

Dane... I'm familiar with the similarities in chord structure between the songs. But if THAT were the definition of "pirating" then every 1-4-5 blues song could be considered plagiarism.

I take George Harrison's word that his inspiration for My Sweet Lord wasn't He's So Fine, but that he got the idea from The Edwin Hawkins Singers' "Oh Happy Day" .

Think you're right. Difference might have been would the Edwin Hawkins Singers (or the composer) have sued George as readily as the Chiffons?

I once "wrote" a song after I woke up humming the tune. I played it for everyone I could think of. "Great tune," they all said. About a month later I went to see a friend's band and they started playing "my" song -- but with different lyrics and in a different key. I had lifted it without even remembering that I'd heard it! I'm not saying that's what George did, but anything is possible. I'll admit that until someone else brought it up, I never thought about the similarities between "He's So Fine" And "My Sweet Lord." These days, with sampling, I guess there's no need to steal, even subliminally.

I agree.... despite the similar chords, the 2 songs really dont sound that much alike at all. The whole lawsuit was just a naked money grab.

I like George's response "The Pirate Song"..... "yo ho ho, he he he, all my friends are pirates and we play on the BBC"

My Sweet Lord

Alleluia

Wish He was mine

Alleluia

That handsome Boy over there

Hare Krishna

The one with the wavy Beard

Hare Rama.

Dave, if I were you, I would copyright that, and then sue that Purple Plagiarist.
