Songs From Tsongas

Post by kbhag »

I got the DVD over the weekend, GREAT closeups of Chris's RM1999 + a bunch of other nice bass guitars. Most outstanding is the Green Mouradian played on Mind Drive/South Side of the Sky.

Are those the only basses he played? Or did he drag out that white p-bass as well?

The one that looks like a P-bass is a light blue Lakland Bob Glaub model that he used on the Magnification stuff. The one he used on Mind Drive was a Mouradian Reality bass (not the old green Mouradian that he has used for many years). It looked like it had a Roland synth pickup on it as well.

Dave, he uses the Mouradian Reality Bass for the opening of Mind Drive then switches to the the Original Green Mouradian for the rest of the song and continues to use it for SSOTS. The Electra MPC comes out at the end of the concert as well. I see a 6 string (looks to be a Tobias?) on "Love will find a way". Anyone know what the dark wood 4 string he plays on Going for the One is? 'Sorta Alembic looking but I don't think is is.

Ken, you are correct sir! I just saw Tsongas for the first time last night and he certainly switched during Mind Drive. (I don't remember him doing that when I saw the show in Atlanta). The black piece on the Reality looks like part of a Roland GK synth system (but I didn't notice any unusual sound).
On Going For The One he used the custom Ranney 8-string (dark walnut). On the Ladder tour he used it on Hearts and It Will Be A Good Day. A nice bass, that. It almost has a hint of a Ricky shape with a potato-ish headstock to boot. It seems appropriate since it replaced his old white Rick 8-string. I'm sure there are good photos of it on the web. (On his Star Licks video he shows it up close).

I believe the 6-stringer is a Carvin (the song is 'Rhythm of Love', by the way). The dark-wood 4 string is a Tobias, on 'Turn of the Century'

'aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhh! I stand corrected Mike! (Thanks, I should know Rhythm of Love) Yeah, I was looking at the Reality bass (seems to be a bolt on), next thing I know he's got the Original Green Mouradian. That bass really sounds great. The second disk has some songs with the RM1999, sounds like he's only using the neck pickup? Not much 'twang. Or is it just my copy of the DVD?

Look closely at the Tobias on Turn of the Century- Is that the custom extended neck I've heard about? He supposedly had it built to reach lower registers while maintaining the 4 string layout. Looks like a loonngg neck with more than 24 frets. Great Video; I was there too.

Hey Kevin-it's me. Welcome to the forum and congrats on that new Rickenbacker! I hope I can see you play it out one of these days. This video is really good, especially if you have surround sound- crank it up on "And You and I"- it rumbles the whole house!

I saw them the night before at Mohegan Sun in Connecticut. They were..."Brilliant!"

The Mouradians sound just incredible. Huge classic Squire Rick tone on "Starship Trooper".

Just simply an eye feast for the ol' RM 1999.

Electra, Carvin, Martin acoustic, Lakland and Tobias all accounted for.

The Tobias by the way is a 4 stringer strung up BEAD. I also believe its extra long scale also.

Steve Howe needs to eat a few quarter pounders huh??

If you look closely, I believe he has the Roland synth mod on the Carvin 6 also.
