Danelectro 12-String?

Post by octagon »

I would really like to get a 12-string but since I only recently got my 330 6-string I can't afford another Rick so was looking at those cheap Danelectro reissues that go for $200-$300. I dig the sparkle finish,Lipstick pickups and the retro vibe but how do they play?Anyone here have any experience with these?Trash or Treasure?

They are GREAT guitars, Mitch. The masonite/plywood semi-hollow double cutaway (DC) models, that is.
They are very comfortable to play, string spacing is ergonomically friendly, and the tone is vintage -but versatile.
While it doesn't exactly emulate or imitate the Rickenbacker sound, with a bit of compression you can get a McGuinn sound. The tone and volume knobs let you dial in a bright shimmer or a nice lush, almost-acoustic sound.

They are highly recommended.

Hey... Peter Buck uses one.

You can hear the DC12 here:

On 'Shoreline Gold', my bandmate John uses his for the chippy, grinding rhythm track.

Just a shade wider than a Tele, I would say. The peghead is 6 to-a-side, so it's long, but I think it still fits in a Coffin case or an aftermarket Telecaster case. I'll ask John next time we speak.
