Yeah, I've seen some nice 60-62's on ebay for between 10 and 15 and rare colors at that.
I was at a guitar show about three years ago and a guy was selling an all original sunburst 65 Jazz with covers, even had the original foam under the tailpiece. $2500.00, I had him talked into letting me give him $500.00 down and put the rest on layaway, but wanted to think about a little, told him I'd call him that night. I called, had decided to buy it, and he said "I sold that 15 minutes after you left" The thing sounded great too, and had nice A neck.

If that '62 had the stack knob configuration, it would be $15,000 all day. If it were Fiesta Red or Shoreline Gold or Sonic Blue or any custom color- you would be pushing high teens.

But again it is worth what one is willing to pay.... for My money, it would be a Precision over a Jazz any day.

I haven't seen a fretless P bass since the late 70's. I had a factory 68 fretless, rosewood necked P bass Candy Apple Red. I traded a Tele bass for it in 1977. I put Rotos on it and ruined the neck within about two months. I didn't realize they could have put a new fretboard on it. I put a 66 Jazz neck on it and sold it for 500 bucks about ten years ago.

Bob, I bought one new in 1983 for $350, and it was left-handed....I walked into the store and I'll bet they had at least a half-dozen lefty fretless P-basses---must have gotten a deal on them I guess! I bought the only red one they had. I remember it being pretty good, but I got rid of it after a couple of years.

You guys know of good places to get going prices for vintage gear? I have looked at Gbase and eBay.

I am helping a friend sell *some* of his instruments by doing some online pricing research. For the fun of it what would a 64' p bass with sunburst finish go for? 63'jazz? 57' p-bass? 58' p bass? All 100% stock with original cases and all are sunburst I believe.

I didn't know they made frretless Pses that late.

Big bucks if they are half way decent.

my guesses:

64 P 4-5 grand

63 J 7-8 grand

57 P don't know, split pickup or no?

58 P 6-8 grand

that is what I figured price wise, thanks bob.

they are all well used (but as good as any I have seen online), and play like butter with great fret condition (I had the privilege to play them myself today… I never really believed all the pre-CBS hype until I actually had the chance to play them. Now if only I could afford one)

An original '57 split pickup P, unmolested, is a strong 8 grand all day.
Fretless P basses were introduced Circa 1970, and have been in production off and on since.

Bob, no doubt you did have a 68 fretless P. But, either it was a custom order (which CBS did not advertise at that time) or it was a one off, because known sources talk to 1970 as being the introduction year for production fretless P basses. It's mention in Klaus Blasquiz' book plus this source here:

And the fretless P's are going for good coin now a days, especially the maple cap ones. The bass you did have is not doubt a very rare and valuable bird indeed
