'the word is live'

Post by levykev »

picked up the new YES three-CD set today: The Word Is Live. excellent. contains a 30-page booklet with some tasty Chris Squire/Rickenbacker photos...

also, check out the cover of the Rascal's "It's Love" at the end of disc one. it contains a 'scatting Squire!" good stuff.

They lost me after "Big Generator." I still enjoy "The Yes Album" even more than "Fragile" and "Close to The Edge."

I'll listen to almost anything with Squire or Geddy playing bass ...

The albums after "Big Generator" are really hit or miss . . . "Union" is the worst they've ever done, "Talk" is just average, "Open Your Eyes" is also just average. "Keys to Ascension I" and "II" are absolutely brilliant, both the live and the studio sections. "The Ladder" is awesome, and "Magnification" is awesome. Judging from their albums, the 90s were really hit or miss for Yes.

However, the only Yes album that I am truly disappointed with is "Tormato" . . . it could've been so good!

Oh, and I second the comment about Geddy and Chris!

yeah, they are the best.

i have a huge soft-spot for "Big Generator"... i was sixteen when that album came out, bought it, and then saw that tour from the sixth row. i had never really listened to YES before that, and there i was seeing Chris Squire for the first time... and his beloved Rickenbacker. i had just purchased a black 4003 a few weeks before, so it ALL came together, talk about a lightbulb moment. still my favorite show of all time.

Roundabout did it for me. I've been a Yes fan ever since. I credit Squire for the reason that I bought a 4001 and learned to play bass. Big outlay for me since I am a guitarist.

Yes is great.

You should check out the Songs from Tsongas DVD, a great two disc concert.

I wanted my first post to be the "you with your Ricky pic" post, but i haven't got one yet. I wanted to pipe up on this thread though.

With regards to the new Yes live 3-cd set on Rhino records, I've good news for you who don't like much of the Yes material post _Big Generator_: None of it is post- _Big Generator_.

That said, I found the recordings to be tedious on the whole. A few interesting moments. Certainly some quality playing from the members of the band. And the booklet is nice.

I say, borrow it from a friend if you can and have a listen. Save your $35-$45 for something else.

my buck two ninety eight,
-Pet

p.s. I should caveat this post as being someone who enjoys and appreciates the band, but not as a collector. I expect that collectors will find this a must-have release.

Hi Glenn welcome to the forum. I am sure that in time you will remedy you Ric shortage but having said that we all seem to be short a Ric or two around here. Or was that a brick or two? Oh that's right there are some that are short both.............drum roll please.

I've heard stuff about the latter Yes...I've never really listened much to anything post BG. I suppose I should check out "The Ladder" at least.

I did get a relatively recent live recording from some no-name...they have these "Extended Versions" live sets from several artists. I have the Yes one, a Peter Framptom one, maybe a couple others. Actually a pretty good series of live recordings.

This Yes CD has Awaken, Siberian Khatru, and I think And You And I...not a teeny-bob selection of Yes tunes. I think was recorded in 2002. For the $6 it cost me at FYE I was very pleased.

I agree with Robert ... Tormato is lame ... it is a dumb name as well ... drama is cool in places ... but some of the lyrics are dumb ... "I am a camera" ... Come on guys you can do better than that ... but at least they keep on writing new material and some of it is very good ...
