What Ricky 12 am I looking for?

Hi all,

Let's assume for argument's sake that I'm looking into Ricky 12 strings.

Is there a way to get a 12 that has the new headstock, and also has the binding accent, and does not have the "breaking wave" curled over upper wing design? Not sure how to describe it...

Yes Glenn. Welcome to the Rickenbacker forum. If you are looking for binding on the back of the guitar only, you will be able yo get the Model 360/12 with the new headstock. It has the rounded upper bout and single back and neck binding rather than the double binding and the cutaway that was characteristic of the Model 360/12V64 for example.

So, I don't suppose there's binding to be had on the front and back, with the new models? I just love the look so much. I'm thinking Susannah Hoffs' guitar's look (though I guess hers was a 6-string).

Not as much of a fan of the rounded-shoulders look, although it's certainly not ugly!

The look you're talking about, Glen, the dual binding, is available on the C and V series 360/12's, however, those won't have the new headstock design. These two aren't like Hoffs model though.

Maybe the 350V3/12 would work for you. Gary has one at NCM.

Oh wait... it doesn't have the new headstock. But it would be similar to Hoff's model. I love mine.

Hi Glenn... (as has been dicussed on this forum), just keep in mind that the 600 series 12-strings have a wider neck than the 300 series. Its enough to be very noticeable.

Sounds like I really need to go out and get a bunch of hands-on experience with these guitars. If I can find some to demo!

As one suffering with big hands syndrome, I own a 660/12. Plenty of room on the neck. I bought this after demo-ing (two years ago)a new 360/12 and a 620/12. Both were hard to fit my hand to. Recently, I tried a '67 360/12, and lo and behold, I was comfortable with the neck, could nail all the notes. I figured that was the best 12 neck I'd ever try...UNTIL the SoCalCon, where I played a new 360/12C63...wonderful neck, easiest 12 I've ever played. The neck shape is deep, though not wide, and quite comfortable and playable for larger hands. Though I understand the wait is long, IMO these are a good choice for those who are concerned with the traditional "small" Rick 12 string necks.

Interesting... I compare the 360/12C63 that you mention, to the 381/12V69 (on the Ric site)

360/12C63
---------
neck width at nut: 41.4mm
neck width at 12th fret: 49.05mm
crown radius: 18.4cm

381/12V69
---------
neck width at nut: 49.05mm
neck width at 12th fret: 49.2mm
crown radius: 25.4cm

What it sounds like to me is that your big hands work with the 360/12C63 perhaps because of the smaller crown radius, and thus more of your hand is maybe "taken up" by the more baseball-bat style neck?

That 381/12V69 OTOH has the interesting spec that it has the more traditional thin-radius neck, but the width doesn't taper from the 12th down to the nut!

Interesting...

EDIT: I forgot to mention that my hands are not big overall, but my fingertips are kinda stubby... so it might be that a wider/shallower neck would be better for me in a 12 string.

EDIT #2: I just looked at the prices for those guitars. Oh snap!

I barre 2 strings (4 on 12-ers) with one fingertip. Still, the 660/12 and the C63 were fine. 660/12's a bit less expensive, and sustain for months.

It did seem a bit out of place, but i just figured that was the "vintage way".

So... anyone got nut width data for the 381 reissue?

All the Ricks are the same except 650 and 660.
