Paul's bass and playing on Lovely Rita?

Post by heavypet »

Hi all,
What bass is paul playing on Lovely Rita? Also, was it fingered or picked? I'm sure this is covered here somewhere but I scrolled through and didn't see it.
cheers!

Interesting! It sounds "warm" and "round" and not very picked. Do you supposed he used the little muting doohickey that's built into the bridge area, or muted by hand maybe?

From what I've heard, all of Sgt. Peppers was recorded with the RIC, and he used the string muting too. It was also all recorded direct into the board, and was the first time on a Beatles recording session that was done. The direct recording method is probably why it sounds a it different because the sound is much more present and immediate that way, and also usually cleaner, which allows the really deep lows to be there that would otherwise not be picked up when amped and miced.

Not my fave-rave song overall, but the opening harmony part is WONDERFUL.

Yep its definitely muted, Your right Greg, its the Rick for all of Sgt Peppers, same as Magical Mystery tour aswell. Im sure he was using a compresser around this time and experimenting with a direct miked amp also

"Rita's" intro bassline foreshadows "Dear Prudence" a bit, don't you think? I always liked "Fixing A Hole." Ronn -- tried playing "Getting Better" and singing it at the same time? Can be tricky.

Yea Im with you too Dave
Getting better throws me off everytime singing with it, actually to be honest Ive always had a job with the whole Sgt peppers album playing along with it, alot of tricky bass parts, Fixing a holes a great song to play along with especially all the swung 8th notes! 'Getting better' and 'Rita' for me are proberly the hardest, although I havnt attempted to work out Mr Kite yet

We added Rita and Getting Better to the active list at the same time, those were a busy few practices for me.
