Ken's on it. Didn't anyone take care of their basses in 71?

More of those "improvements" from the 70's in the best possible taste....

If it's a cheap(ish) reserve it could be worth it. Thankfully it's not a 21 fret bass which I always think about when 71's come up.

I wonder after looking at this one,Did any vintage 4001-60s early 70s have black trc or pickguard?

That's a good question Ken. It does look raised to me, suggesting it could be a later type. They made a black one for a white bass in 71 so it says in Smith's book though.

I wasn't suggesting that the trc and pickguard on this bass was stock[its not],just got thinking how cool a black plexi trc would be.

I think both the TRC and the pickguard is unoriginal.

Both the TRC and the pickguard on that 4001 are definitely not original to it.
A Rickenbacker bass is much like the Jaguar E car - perennially ultra-fashionable.

My '72 4001 Deluxe looked like this one except it had a white pickguard & TRC straight from the factory. Bids have skyrocketed since it was posted, BTW

Is that a long headstock? Can't tell, haven't seen enough. I thought all pre-'72s had the longer version....

Nah, up to '69 I think, '70 onwards were "babies".

Got it...but the "babies" born before '72 lacked the skunk stripe, right?

Correct, Skunk stripe ran from 1972 till the 4001 was retired in 1983

4001s model got it's Skunk stipe in 1980 when it was released !!! There's some speculation as to when the 4001s stopped production, 84-85 or 86 !!!
